During this trip we will talk about the knowledge of the loyal warriors of Christ, whose principals of faith and brotherhood traced the European Crusades. This same wisdom left an imprint in the Portuguese territory, being this wonderful land an unrivalled destination in terms of Templaric heritage.
Our journey will begin in the town of Santarém, offered to the Knights Templar by the first king of Portugal. Then we will head off to Castelo de Almourol (Almourol’s Castle), an outstanding and unique fortress thanks to its location in an islet in the Tagus River, which strategically raised difficulties to the enemy.
Following the steps of these courageous knights, we reach the headquarters of the Order in Portuguese lands: the Convento de Cristo (Convent of Christ) in Tomar. This monumental structure, classified as World Heritage Site by UNESCO, presents a sensational architectural set.
To finish our trajectory, we will visit one of the most majestic Portuguese aqueducts: the Aqueduto de Pegões (Aqueduct of Pegões). Classified as a national monument and intact since the 16th century, this masterpiece was projected by one of the greatest names in Architecture: Filippo Terzi.
One of the most ancient European military castles can be found in the middle of a river?
Being a finalist in the competition of the 7 Wonders of Portugal, Almourol’s castle is a masterpiece in both architecture and Templaric history in Portugal.
